Glass is superior to sand in your Sand Filter

On my pool equipment pad sits a Sand Filter, but it's filled with crushed glass instead of sand. Using crushed glass in a swimming pool's sand filter instead of traditional sand has several advantages that make it a better option for pool owners. Here are seven reasons why:
- Superior Filtration: Crushed glass has finer filtration capabilities compared to sand. It can filter down to as small as 5 microns, while sand typically filters particles around 20-30 microns. This means the water will be cleaner and clearer.
- Less Bacterial Growth: Sand can harbor bacteria over time, creating biofilm within the filter, which is difficult to remove. Crushed glass, being smoother and non-porous, resists bacterial growth and prevents biofilm buildup, making it a more hygienic option.
- Longevity: Crushed glass lasts longer than traditional sand. Sand needs to be replaced every 3-5 years, while crushed glass can last up to 10 years, reducing maintenance costs and efforts.
- Eco-Friendly: Crushed glass is often made from recycled glass, making it an environmentally friendly alternative to sand, which is typically sourced from natural resources. This aligns well with eco-conscious values, such as those promoted by Copper Pools.
- Backwashing Efficiency: Crushed glass requires less frequent and shorter backwashing cycles than sand because it resists clogging. This saves water and energy, lowering operational costs.
- Reduced Channeling: Over time, sand can compact and develop channels, reducing the effectiveness of filtration. Crushed glass, with its more angular shape, resists channeling, ensuring more consistent filtration over time.
- For pool owners looking to improve water quality, reduce maintenance, and make more eco-friendly choices, crushed glass offers clear benefits over traditional sand.
